Biography

British Soprano Rosie Watts is currently studying Vocal and Operatic Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, with the distinguished Maureen Brathwaite. A versatile performer, Rosie's repertoire ranges from early 17th century song to 21st century opera, particularly favouring German Lied and Opera.

During her time in Birmingham, Rosie has performed various operatic roles, and this has confirmed her passion for pursuing her aspiration to become an operatic performer. Roles include First Boy (Mozart, Die Zauberflöte), Ninetta (Mozart, La finta semplice), and Prima Sorella Cercatrice (Puccini, Suor Angelica). Rosie enjoys being both a recitalist and chorus member.

Rosie has also developed a passion for German Lied, adoring the ways in which stories are told. As a passionate recitalist, she enjoys performing a wide range of lied, recent performances include Schumann's Sieben Lieder von Elisabeth Kulmann, Clara Schumann's Sechs Lieder and excerpts from Wolf's Mörike-Lieder. Rosie has undertaken her A2 German at the Goethe Institut and is proficient in both singing and libretto.

Rosie believes that classical music is for everyone and recently delved into educational outreach work. She devised, directed and performed in 'I Hate Music - or do I?', a new production aimed to introduce opera and classical music to any audience. This project sparked Rosie's passion for directing, but also being apart of educational outreach programmes. More information can be found under 'Projects.'

Here, Rosie performed as part of the International Opera Awards Foundation Chorus at the London Coliseum, as a member of the BBC Symphony Chorus in the BBC Proms 2019, and in the 1901 Arts Club as part of a joint recital. She was also awarded First Prize in the John Ireland English Song Prize 2018-2020. Whilst in London, Rosie discovered her 'first love' for opera and consequently, she attended the National Opera Studio's Summer Opera course during 2018 and 2019. Rosie studied the roles of Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), Niece 1 (Peter Grimes), First Lady (Die Zauberflöte) and Sidonie (Armide).
